Project Controls Engineer

Job Description

Reporting to the Assystem Nuclear New Build Project Control Manager, working within the SMR Project Delivery Team, supporting the delivery of the Assystem scope across the framework.
The role will be working with the Assystem Business and Delivery Managers in ensuring the frameworks are compliant to the contract and internal cost requirements and supporting the delivery of these frameworks.

We are looking for a dynamic person, a natural self-starter who has experience of Cost Control / Project Controls within a project environment.


  • Order book management, creation, maintenance and acceptance of purchase orders in line with corporate and client processes and procedures
  • Hours and expenses reconciliation to enable accurate invoicing on a monthly basis
  • Maintaining and updating cashflow process including aged debt to agreed targets
  • Responsible for Change Management
  • Manage and track progress again contract KPI's both monthly internally and quarterly externally
  • Ownership of Projects within Financial control systems, ensuring all resources have access to correct booking codes


  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of financial information, weekly hours booking, invoicing, WIP, order book and cash forecasting
  • Ensure the accuracy of data communicated and reported to all stakeholders.
  • The highlighting of any current and potential issues to Senior PMO / Business Manager
  • Maintain compliance with approved processes, procedures, and project execution plans.


  • Based out of Assystem Blackburn Office with occasional visits to client offices in the Derby region.

Communication and contacts:

  • Good communication is a key aspect of the position, has to communicate effectively in verbal and written format at all levels, including project documentation for clients, project reporting and day to day discussion of tasks with engineers and others.

Essential Experience & Qualifications:

  • Numerical skills in managing tasks, projects and portfolios of up to £5m per annum
  • Conversant with Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Outlook, Teams
  • Financial experience particularly of business financial systems.
  • End-to-end cashflow management, commercial control and cost aspects of tasks both at a project portfolio and potentially framework level.
  • Commercially focused, have the ability to work confidentiality with financial information and financial systems.
  • Opportunity to develop Project Management skills.
  • Ideally have experience of cost estimating and management of fixed priced contracts using estimate at completion / estimate to complete methodology
  • Capable of managing own work
  • Commercial awareness (e.g. planning requirements, change control / compensation events / cost control)
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment, both within Assystem and an integrated multi company team

Desirable Experience:

  • Nuclear engineering consultancy experience.

Qualifications required:

  • Minimum education standard of 5 GCSEs grades A-C or equivalent including English and Maths

Desirable Qualification:

  • Minimum HNC/D Degree
