The UK’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) requires qualification procedures to be in place to confirm that structures, systems, and components necessary to safety will perform their required safety functions throughout their operational lives.
The UK’s new build programme utilises overseas reactor designs, with the majority of safety-critical components potentially manufactured overseas. These components will need to be performed following the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) technical standards.
Nuclear Equipment qualification (EQ) is a systematic approach to ensuring that safety-critical components and systems manufactured for new nuclear power stations meet the relevant quality standards.
The ONR takes a goal-based approach to EQ. Nuclear operators will need to demonstrate that their reactor components and systems will safely operate as intended, not just that they meet the prescribed IAEA standards. The approach intends to drive continual improvements in reactor safety performance. However, the implementation can make it difficult for operators to prove compliance, leading to time and cost overruns in new build projects.
Equipment Qualification, or EQ, is the practice of generating evidence that relevant components will fulfil their specified safety functions for the duration required during normal, abnormal and postulated accident conditions. The qualification of components for safety classified nuclear applications can be challenging, particularly for organisations new to the atomic market sector or supplying to international projects.
TÜV SÜD is teaming up with the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and equipment supplier Friotherm to deliver a technical forum on Nuclear Equipment Qualification.
Bringing together TÜV SÜD, the ONR, and Friotherm together provides a unique opportunity to present insights into applying the equipment qualification process from three perspectives:
a regulatory perspective,
a manufacturer's perspective,
and that of a certifying qualification body.
This approach provides a 360° view of the most important points and challenges and learn how to successfully navigate through an equipment qualification process.
