The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, an acronym for Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, is an intergovernmental organisation that was founded in 1954 and is now comprising of 23 member states.
The CERN laboratory is located astride the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva where physicists, engineers and technicians work together in probing the fundamental structure of the universe with high-energy nuclear physics research. CERN is the site of the Large Hadron Collider( LHC), the world's largest and highest-energy particle collider. It also hosts a large computing facility, which is primarily used to store and analyze data from experiments, as well as simulate events.
